Description

Data Deposit Box™ is a comprehensive online PC backup solution enabling everyday PC users to easily backup, restore, and share information online. It was specifically designed for everyday computer users without the benefit of an IT support staff.

Data Security: With Data Deposit Box, each file 448 bit encrypted before it leaves your PC. It travels the Internet this way and is stored on the DDB backup servers as a bunch of numbered files containing encrypted data. Your encryption key is unique to you. Only you have the ability to access your data.

Easy find: When you download and run software, it will automatically figure out where things like your Outlook email, My Documents, Desktop, and Favorites are located. From there you can easily add or remove other folders if you wish.

Backup schedule: Data Deposit Box uses a continuous online backup process where your files are backed up automatically as soon as they change. This means that if you close a Word document at 2pm on Tuesday, that file will back up at 2:01pm Tuesday. If something horrible happens at 2:15pm, you’re protected. The Backup Client has a feature that suspends the backup when the PC is in use. When you use the keyboard or mouse, Data Deposit Box pauses. When you stop to answer the phone, backup continues.

File versioning: Data Deposit Box keeps multiple versions of your files. If a file gets corrupted, or if you just need an earlier version of a file, you simply go online and download whichever version of the file you need.

Speed: With Data Deposit Box, once you have a file backed up once, the software will detect and extract only the data that changes for backup. If you have a 500MB email file and get 2MB of new mail, DDB only needs to back up the 2MB that changed. That backup can happen in a matter of seconds. These changes are stored in your Data Deposit Box as different versions. This is why you can recover so many earlier versions of your files without taking up a lot of extra storage.

Interruptable: Data Deposit Box was designed to be interruptible. If your connection gets interrupted, the backup will simply pause until the connection comes back. Then it will continue your backup from where it left off.

File deletion: Data Deposit Box will never delete your files automatically. If you delete a file by mistake, rest assured that it will still be in your Data Deposit Box. This is what a reliable backup is for. Instead, with Data Deposit Box you can run a Clean-Up wizard that will reconcile the files on your PC with your online backup and suggest things you may wish to delete. Once you have reviewed the list, you can choose to delete those files if you no longer need them.

Multiple PCs, servers, or networks: With Data Deposit Box you can install the software on as many computers as you need. You can add as many users as you like. You can back PCs, laptops, servers, hard disks (even external), network drives, even USB memory keys. In all cases you just pay $2/GB for the storage you actually use. For example, if you back up 1GB from one PC, that will cost $2/month. If you back up 1GB shared among 5 computers, that will still cost just $2/month. Online data is stored in separate volumes that are sorted by PC name and drive letter. If you have a similar file with the same name on more than one PC, there is no danger of the files overwriting each other.

Storage type - unlimited, storage or bandwidth capped, pay as you go: No storage caps and you can upload unlimited data and pay for what you use. With Data Deposit Box you are charged based on how much storage you actually use. If you back up 1GB you will be charged $2/month. If you suddenly need to back up 1.1GB then next month you will be charged $2.20. The number of PCs is not important. You only pay for what you actually use.

Remote Access: With Data Deposit Box, you can install the backup and restore software on as many computers as you like. There is no charge unless you actually back something up. You can also access your data remotely with any web browser. If you are in a client meeting and suddenly need a file from your PC, simply log into your Data Deposit Box from your client’s web browser and download the file you need.

File Sharing: Once your data has been backed up, you have the ability to share selected portions of it with whomever you want. You can share individual files or folders. In the 'Online Storage' section of the Web Client, you can mark a file as 'Sharable', and assign it a separate password. The system will give it a unique URL for download and even send an email to the recipient with a link. The system maintains a log of who downloaded it and when.

Dial-up Friendly: Because backups are compressed, incremental and interruptible, they work quite well on a dial-up connection. If you have a lot of data, you may find that your initial backup takes quite some time. Rest assured that it will get done. Once the initial backup is done, only individual file changes have to go up. So the amount of data going out through your modem is small.

File types: DDB recommends you only backup data files. The system will automatically exclude Program and Operating System files.

Operating Systems: The Backup Client will run on any version of Microsoft Windows from Windows 95 onward. Macintoshes can run the client using Windows emulation software, such as Virtual PC, or they can use a PC to do the backup through a mapped drive letter.

Restoration process: Very easy. You just a right click the Data Deposit Box icon at the bottom of the screen, select 'Restore', find the file in the tree and right click 'Restore'. That's it. To retrieve a previous version of a file, login to the web site; select 'Online Storage', find the file in the tree; click on the file link, then click the "Download" button. That's it.

Price: With Data Deposit Box you are charged based on how much storage you actually use. If you back up 1GB you will be charged $2/month. If you suddenly need to back up 1.1GB then next month you will be charged $2.20. The number of PCs is not important. You only pay for what you actually use. Your bill is calculated as a monthly average of your daily space usage. If you delete something part way through the month, it will be factored into the average.
